NLECTC-West
provides computer forensic analysis at no charge to
criminal justice agencies. The analyses display information from
computer hard drives and non-volatile storage media, such as removable
disks and digital camera memory cards. At this time, the Center
does
not offer the capability to deal with failed devices. Center personnel
have experience with PC, Macintosh, and workstation platforms and
are
familiar with a variety software and file formats. The Center maintains
an inventory of devices for reading older data archives. The services
cover aspects of both recovery, that is, making visible what is
known
to be stored, and discovery, that is, finding connections and
identifying particular kinds of information that might be stored.
Typical cases involved finding and displaying:
- Address
Books that were deleted by the user
-
Images stored on the computer
-
Deleted text files
-
Multiple versions of the same document
-
Partially overwritten images
-
Potentially valid credit card and telephone numbers
-
Files containing particular language
-
Internal time sequences of file manipulations
Please contact
the NLECTC-West center or evidence handling procedures
and delivery instructions at 888-548-1618.
